How can MRI overcome challenges in multiple sclerosis

This symposium brings the community together to address the critical role of MRI in advancing the diagnosis and prognosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). With the upcoming updates to the McDonald diagnostic criteria, this session necessitates cross-disciplinary dialogues to explore how MRI innovations can meet the clinical needs and help tackle diagnostic challenges. The session will also emphasize bridging gaps between clinical insights and engineering advancements, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between clinicians, radiologists, and MR researchers.

Session duration: 90m
Intended audience: Neuroscientists, Engineers, Clinicians, Physicists, Radiologists, Neuroimmunologists, Neuropathologists

Moderators: Myrte Strik, Sonia Waiczies (Confirmed: No)

Session description

This session will be about uncovering the remaining challenges in the diagnosis and prognosis in multiple sclerosis. The objective of this session is to bring the various disciplines together to start overcoming these challenges with the help of MRI.

The program will follow this structure:

  • Introduction (5 min)
  • Presentation by (not yet confirmed but invited speaker), Amsterdam UMC (TBC): Introduction, how MRI is used in diagnosis of multiple sclerosis - new Mcdonald’s diagnostic criteria (10 min)
  • Presentation by Nima Mahmoudi, Charité: MRI in treatment management of multiple sclerosis (10 min)
  • Presentation by Adil Maarouf, Aix-Marseille Université: Ultrahigh field applications in multiple sclerosis (10 min)
  • Presentation by Maria Sofia Martire, San Raffaele: MRI-neuropathology in multiple sclerosis (10 min)
  • Presentation by Alessandro Cagol, University of Basel: Advanced imaging in multiple sclerosis (10 min)
  • Presentation by Menno Schoonheim, Amsterdam UMC: Challenges left to be answered for the multiple sclerosis field (10 min)
  • Questions and Answers (20 min)
